The Sunday Edition: May 22nd, 2022

Happy Sunday, friend! If you’re in Canada, happy long weekend, woohoo!! This weekend always kind of marks the start of summer living with barbecues, time at cottages and beaches, and lounging on the dock. Unfortunately, this weekend has been pretty soggy in Southern Ontario, we’ve had rain, off and on thunderstorms, and lots of clouds, but you can’t rain on this parade. Topher and I are at my cottage this weekend with my sister, nephew, and mum having a relaxing weekend with lots of games, cooking, and good food.

This summer I’m determined to find the perfect non-alcoholic drink, I haven’t been drinking much since February because quite frankly it leaves me feeling like garbage. After one or two glasses of wine, I get the worst headaches and it’s not worth it. So, I’m on the hunt for the perfect mocktail for summertime. Follow along on TikTok as I try out mocktails and non-alcoholic drinks throughout this summer!

In other news, I think mercury is in retrograde currently which might explain this bananas week. I feel like between Topher’s job, my job, the reno, and family commitments there has just been so much to juggle lately and I feel like I’m dropping the ball most of the time. Do you ever feel that way? Like you know there’s a center point in your life but there are phases when no matter what you do, you can’t that balance or equilibrium.

Questions of the week

Q: what would you tell your younger self?

A: think twice before thinking you need to follow the status quo and go through the expected motions of high school, university, work, etc. Topher and I talk about this all the time, that university has become an end-all-be-all in society, but I really don’t think it is or that it should be held in such high regard. I have also been loving the quote and idea that “other peoples’ opinions are none of your business” and I wish I felt this way years before now.

Q: best way to use rhubarb?

A: OMG, how do I answer this succinctly, my love of rhubarb runs deep. My favourite way to enjoy rhubarb is cooking it down with sugar and then having that stewed rhubarb with custard. *My British is showing* haha! Rhubarb is also delicious cooked into loaves and pies. Rhubarb can be made into a fruit crumble, you can pair it with strawberries (a classic combo) and even make a rhubarb chutney and pair that with savoury or spicy dishes!

Q: what protein powder do you recommend?

A: I recommend keeping it simple with collagen peptides. Collagen is super absorbable and it’s really easy to digest, so that’s always my first choice, I like Organika Collagen. I also really like Genuine Health’s fermented vegan protein powder. Those are my top two!

Q: what’s your process for coming up with new recipes?

A: it really depends but generally I start with a category, for example, breakfast, dinner, 30-minute meal, etc. Then I think of flavours that I’ve been craving and flavour combinations that do well on the blog or I come up with a shortlist of three or four ideas and ask my community on Instagram what they want! Then, I start trying out different techniques and methods and measurements and figure out the best way to make a recipe.

Q: do you ever get tired of cooking and want someone to cook for you?

A: oh yes, absolutely. It’s usually Thursdays when I hit a cooking wall. Between cooking recipes for the blog, making reels and TikToks of other simple recipes, and then on top of that making dinner every night (if I haven’t made a recipe earlier in the day for dinner) and breakfast and lunch, it’s a lot of cooking and dishes! I love when Topher makes dinner, it doesn’t happen often, but a few times a month he’ll take over dinner and it’s blissful (as long as I stay out of the kitchen LOL)!
