The Sunday Edition: May 29th, 2022

We made it through another week! Congratulations!! This was one heck of a week, so the fact that you made it through should leave you feeling proud and satisfied. From the tragic events in Texas to the ongoing war in Ukraine, honestly, this world feels brutal and hopeless. This is coming from an optimist, yikes! I think we all need to take a hard look at the boundaries we have, is social media affecting your mental health? Is the news making you feel burdened? Turn it all off. We, as humans, have not evolved to be able to cope with tragic events coming at us from all angles from around the world. We aren’t meant to know the minute-by-minute details of the news from across the globe, it’s not natural. I’m sure this opinion is controversial, I’m sure folks expect that each of us should speak out against atrocities otherwise, we’re seen as selfish and uncaring. I don’t think that’s true at all.

Topher and I went to our first proper concert since before the pandemic on Friday night. We went to see Donovan Woods, one of our favourite singer-songwriters. We played his song “Clean Slate” for our first dance at our wedding. The concert was incredible, live music is so healing and the renovations at Massey Hall in Toronto are beautiful.

We’ve pushed our renovation start date back a bit to mid-June. We’ve had such a jam-packed Spring and starting the renovations right at the beginning of June felt overwhelming given we haven’t had a weekend at home since April.

Questions of the week

Q: home design trend you’re over?

A: mid-century modern I think is way overdone, I prefer light and bright to lots of darker wood tones.

Q: what’s your favourite flower?

A: it’s hard to choose just one, but right now I’m loving ranunculus and lisianthus.

Q: what carry-on luggage do you recommend?

A: Topher gave me a Monos carry-on suitcase for my birthday and I absolutely love it!

Q: favourite way to make a fast weeknight dinner?

A: keep staples on hand to easily add flavour. Lately, we’ve been loving stir-fries for a fast, easy, no-fuss dinner. I always have red or green curry paste on hand as well as coconut milk and frozen veggies. Stirfry up some tofu (or meat) and veggies, add curry paste, coconut milk, and sambal and you have a yummy, healthy meal.

My biggest takeaway is to keep things on hand that you can easily make a meal or sauce out of. If you like Asian flavours, keep fish sauce, sesame oil, sambal, and soy sauce in your fridge. If you like pizza, keep frozen pizza dough, sauce and cheese on hand.

Q: what should I get my friend for a wedding gift?

A: leading up to our wedding we had friends ask us if we wanted something off our registry or if we wanted cash. It’s always useful to get money, but it usually just goes towards bills rather than something special. Whereas a physical gift, especially if it’s something off a registry will have the happy couple think of you when they use your gift which I think is more special than money. If you’re not sure, just ask the couple what they’d prefer!

Q: what’s your happy place?

A: our backyard is definitely my happy place, it’s so relaxing and when our flowers are blooming it makes me so happy.
